EQUINE PHYSIOTHERAPY

The horse is designed to be an athlete by nature, just like the human, and the stresses and strains this places on the musculoskeletal system can make the horse at risk of injury and long term complaints. This can affect both the performance and behaviour of the horse.

Routine maintenance checks can be used to identify any potential problems early and to reduce the risk of injury, and in the event of break down and injury physiotherapy can then be used to restore normal movement and function and optimise the healing process, whilst managing pain.

Common complaints that physiotherapy can treat in horses:

  • Schooling and performance dysfunction
  • Pre and post competition management
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Effective working on the ground and in the saddle
  • Joint problems e.g. pain, swelling, stiffness, long term conditions
  • Spinal soreness, strain or trauma
  • Post surgery rehabilitation

Treatments include:

  • Joint mobilisation
  • Soft tissue techniques including massage, myofascial release and trigger points
  • H-wave
  • Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (Biomag)
  • Photizo light and infrared therapy device
  • Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)
  • Specific exercise and rehabilitation programmes
  • Professional advice
  • Advanced Kinesio taping techniques
